25 december 2002
this site has been at an unhealthy standstill for a very long
time. as i have mentioned, i'm a college student and i have increasingly
less time to update the site. ironically, i'm here to note that the
site won't be updated for a while because i'm going to guyana.
a few significant things have happened during the last
two months while this site remained dormant. guyana recently made the
cnn world news when prime minister sam hinds temporarily closed channels
cns-6 and nbtv-9, reportedly because of socially irresponsible programming
(story here).
also, sadder news was the death of hugh desmond hoyte on sunday, 22
december (details).
i find myself occupied with the shutting down of the two
television stations in guyana. one side may see it as the government
denying citizens' freedom of speech, or more accurately, freedom of
expression. another side may observe that the programs in question really
were provoking racial violence, and additionally, that the owners breached
their contracts (broadcasting licenses) by airing programs that they
agreed not to, via those contracts.
as guyanese, it's important that we are able to question
and debate in issues that are ours. it's important that we revolt when
revolt is necessary, and be responsible when not revolting. we must
stand tall, and do the tiny individual things that make guyana stronger.
before i leave for guyana in a few days, i want to make
as many badly-needed updates as possible. details of the updates can
be viewed on the latest page.
the last time i left for guyana, i made many promises
that i didn't keep. therefore, i won't promise essay upon essay, but
rather, i'll say--as i did before--that this site and its beliefs are
now and always concrete. have a nice new year.
