from a member of the old guyanese in america site.

Dear Manager:
It has occurred to me that you, first of all, condemn most "Guyanese in America", however, no credit is given to the people who have slaved away for their children or family to have a better education, a safer place to live, or even send money for their family in need, because there are hardly any opportunities to make money, at least not enough to support a big family. Don't misinterpret me. It would come to the minds of many that the fact that they have big families it's a problem created by themselves. No, in many cases the person who strives to make their family happy is not the cause of the suffering (a too big family), it is just a member who is indeed a family person and loves his family enough to come way out here just to get enough money to send back creating a happy family. Not everyone over here is happy about it! Some are, but not all. Many Guyanese who come over here have to be American. Without a doubt this is not their fault; it is human nature. Do I have to explain this? Many teens have to be American or act American because of peer pressure. We all know what it feels like to be pressured for acceptance. If you don't, you would never understand. To get jobs you have to be American, to get help you have to be American. Guyana is not a recognised country, therefore-- Guyanese have to raise their standard/status by being American. Lets take it the other way around to get an idea of what I really mean: If an American visits Guyana, going for a job interview, he immediately gets the job-- after all, he is from a powerful country and therefore has to put very little effort through his pallid body to get what he wants. Do I need to tell you what a Guyanese would have to do to get the job? The American just simply has to be American. In some cases I'm sure, if the American 'lowered' himself to be as Guyanese as possible-- he would be considered to be an ass. You should've gotten my point by now.

But, in the first place, Guyanese don't see the light. We don't have a history; we do, but where is it? Surely it isn't in any books I know of, at least not in depth. There is no profound history of Guyana. The British ruled. We know that. Guyana is a young country: Independence Day> May 26th, 1966. Guyanese need to know their history and other countries history. Places like America went through wars to gain prosperity. We have to battle to get it too. Giving up hope and abandoning your country as you mentioned is no path to this. This is what Guyanese fail to understand. Taking the easy way out isn't the answer. It's your fault that Guyana is supposedly fucked up. You hope to leave your country because it does not give you what you want, the life you want? GO TO HELL then! You people are the ones who vote PPP and PNC every four years and none of them FIT A FUCKING SHIT! It's always a nigger vs. coolie vote: if you feel otherwise that's your pathetic problem, not mine. I've seen the light, it's time Guyanese see it too. And it's your fault. You vote for them and they make you perish. They are in demand; they were the demanded parties for the longest while. And thus, will just give you enough to keep a standard, just enough to give you a teenie bit more than the other party so you can say they did more. There is no competition! and you will suffer for it, not them. PNC was in for 28 fucking years and what did they do? Compare that to what COULD HAVE BEEN DONE IN 28 YEARS PEOPLE! 28 YEARS! That is quite a long time, trust me. PPP, obviously, had to prove themselves when they got into power after a fair election was inevitable. Cheddi Jagan got into power and finally had to prove himself worthy of getting in. Some say he did a bad job, some say good. But I've herd a comment I will never forget from the last person whom I know very well, a very unbiased person, he said: "How can people expect Cheddi to fix in five years what the PNC has fucked up in 28?"
Think about it.
You choose.
I agree with you Mister Manager, but you too need to be less 'narrow minded'.

in replying to your email, i will present one of the first things i wrote when i started this site. it's on the home page.

this is a site that'll be looking at the way guyanese in america act. i will always stress that there is so much to be said. what must be said first is even though there are guyanese who shed their guyanese culture and become so american as soon as they step foot unto american soil, there are also true guyanese like myself who would die or kill for their country. we are the few, young or old, who are here because of necessity and not because of greed or "to get away from these lost guyanese."

Just a few questions to be asked 'truth':
Firstly, what is a true Guyanese?... What is it that makes a Guyanese true? and secondly: what is so necessary that we have to come out here to get? Is it something which we cannot get in Guyana?
I have figured the answers to these questions... I wish to hear yours.
Also.. "we are the few"? How do you know whether there are few or many? What do you consider to be 'few'?

Circumstances is what makes us who we are. I told you that people who come here are forced by society to change; we cannot fight ourselves. It takes a man to withstand physical pressure... and a GOD to ignore mental strain. Society makes us who we are. Whether Guyanese choose to change or not is a human's choice... not their country's or other Guyanese like you and I. But this is our ideology. They may feel differently. Ignorant, selfish, "greedy" Guyanese look up onto this supposedly mountain of gold in awe... Blinded by the outside from the blood sucker inside. I say this: a smart man will ponder or already know this... an idiot will ignore it.

Men should (again my belief but not everyone else's) try to walk in the shoes of other men for miles before they judge. Unfortunately, we're too lazy to do this and generally generalize!
You condemn what they do quite possibly unconsciously. Well call them idiots, but a sleeping man will never see the light if you let him alone-- disturb him and he will be angry. A smart man, however, will first notice the light.

"what must be said first is even though there are guyanese who shed their guyanese culture and become so american as soon as they step foot unto american soil, there are also true guyanese like myself who would die or kill for their country. "

True.

I also saw something on your site about people ''abandoning" their families. This is no different from the people who leave their family-- men and women. The children are left to perish. This happens everyday... the people come here to get more money to aid their family better. They abandoned physically and soon enough... mentally-- that's their problem or way of dealing with the problem.
Maybe too fed up with strive to get enough money to buy bread, because they have a no good job, because they have no education, because of their parents, who never bothered to send them to school or couldn't afford to buy the materials, because, because, because.
It, in most cases, isn't their fault that they think this way... if you don't believe me> go ask them!
Some might have fled the racism, government corruption, disease... medical aid... whatever the reason. I say once you set foot on this synthetic land you become part of it. Of course many who had to be pushed into the fire will hop and jump while others enjoy the burn> swallowing it whole... some just sit in remorse. And they came here on their own, they will take it as their own after all: "I WORKED HARDDDD TO GET HERE!" so whether it's fucked up or not... " IT'S GREAT!" much like when you buy something that was out of your reach (financially) ... whether its any good or not... "I LOVE IT!"

1/ every 7 people you see in New York is Guyanese. Guyana has the highest rate of emigration in the South American Continent... and there are more Guyanese in the U.S. than in Guyana.

FUCK ALL OF YOU TRAITORS WHO WILL NEVER EVEN GIVE GUYANA ANOTHER THOUGHT, OR IF YOU DO: CONDEMN IT THUS CONDEMN ME!

a true guyanese is a guyanese patriot. the definition of patriot can be found in any dictionary. the neccesity for which guyanese come here is most often, an education. you even gave a reason for that question -- guyanese come here when they're at the hands of poverty and simply feeding their children may be impossible.
"we are the few" refers to the relatively few guyanese who express patriotism by resisting the american filth, and because we are here of necessity. these two things distinguishes the few from all others.
you said, "people who come here are forced by society to change; we cannot fight ourselves", but then there is no reason to fight ourselves, because it was society that forces us to change, right? a person isn't society.
you also said, "You condemn what they do quite possibly unconsciously". within context it implied that there is some o.k. reason why guyanese prance around like americans, the creators of slavery -- the same evil that created our state of near anarchy in guyana. there can be no justification for acting american, i.e., there is no excuse for slavery.
no one has to tell me how bad things are in guyana, i know, but it is important to know that this dilapidated state is not at our fault, this is the normal state of a nation that has been supressed for so long.
