Hey,

i was just looking at some guyana websites and i happened to come across your site.

i think it your site is very admirable although i do not agree with all of your views and standings on certain things. Mostly though, i think i pretty much think the same about my guyanese parents and my family. I think you have a lot of courage to actually say this on a website to all these people even though it prolly be controversial to some people. i also think you do a good job of corresponding with the messages you get from some of the visitors to your site. (i noticed this while reading your letters from 'jen')

my parents were born in guyana but my brother and i were born and grew up here in the us. As i said before i agree with alot of what you said. Alot of guyanese people in the us are reallie hypocrites. sometimes i think their kids are even worse. i mean you could go to richmond hill for one day and see some of the kids there who act like they are the biggest gangsters and guyanese girls who dress like they cant afford clothes. (Being a 18-year-old guy i dont know if u would complain about that) but i think these people are the ones giving guyanese a worse bad name than their parents are.

on thing im tryin to understand though is your so-called 'eminem effect.' Exactly what is that?

looking forward to a response,

Angela

a reply to the above

hello,
first of all, i must send my regrets for such a belated reply. your e-mail was sent to me on 6 august, but i was in guyana then and couldn't reply. two months later, and i finally have time to do so.
thank you for visiting the site and taking time to give comments. it's true that the guyanese kids here do shame guyana more than their parents.
the 'eminem effect' is the method used by many to gain attention and popularity by outwardly disrespecting and insulting others.
the owners of the website guyanaspice.com (now non-existent) would use this tactic against persons who would e-mail them; whether the letters were about technical issues, or issues concerning things that were generally offensive on the site. they once bashed a muslim woman because of her e-mail that tamely questioned them about their statements regarding islam and the middle east (this was after 11 september 2001). the singer eminem himself used this tactic to achieve fame, hence the name.
thank you again for listening to guyanatruth.
