8 april 2003
after about five months, guyanatruth receives a letter
My name is nicholas chung and i am an american born guyanese(my parents
are) . I really appreciate what you are doing to open our eyes because
it is so easy to become disillusioned in this country that prides itself
on wealth and power. Dont get me wrong becase i know i am very fortunate
to be here and my parents made a lot of sacrifices but i feel as though
being here tries to make one forget their culture and heritage. I really
hope to go back to guyana soon because i havent been since i was 2 and
i am 16 now. It is always a joy to meet other carribean teens like me,
especially from gt and tt because i feel a renewed since of pride in
my heritage. I usually have to supress my hot blood when around american
teens who just dont understand the simple pleasures in something such
as eating curry chicken and dhal pourri or windin up to soca. I really
hope to get a career in travel and foreign language so i can experience
other cultures too. Had i the chance i would have moved to a place like
boa vista in brazil or even manaus as many other guyanese have. But
life her is so black and white, i mean that both figuratively and literally.
You have to walk a certain way or talk a certain way and even act a
certain way so that others dont think your too foreignish. But enough
with the bitching keep p the good work and bring the truth back to the
people. -peace

my reply to the above
hello,
thanks a lot for taking the time to comment on guyanatruth.
it's always insightful to hear from people who feel the same, or the
opposite way.
i'm surprised that you have an attachment to guyana--considering
that you haven't been there for 14 years. it's funny because there are
guyanese-born people who _never_ miss guyana after they emigrate.
i admire your feelings about guyana, its culture,
and the west indian culture altogether. i agree with you that guyana
offers a happiness that is not derived from materialism or vulgarism.
guyana has been the only place that i've been able to feel real happiness.
there are a lot of lies out there, and a lot of truth
to be uncovered. there are many, many problems in guyana, a problem
for every letter of the alphabet, but for all these problems there are
answers. once the many truths about our society are realised by all
guyanese, we will rise.
thanks again for your letter, and i hope you continue
to find guyanatruth beneficial.
